The second Africa – India Forum Summit (20-25 May), is currently taking place at the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Summit Forum falls within the framework of partnership between Africa and India. It is a follow-up of the first Africa-India Forum which took place in New Delhi in 2008 during which the New Delhi Declaration and Framework of Cooperation was adopted. The second Summit’s main objective is to evaluate the progress of this partnership to date, further deepen relations, and reaffirm the commitment to promoting cooperation in priority areas. Côte d’Ivoire
Abidjan – Foreign dignitaries and local leaders gathered in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire on 21 May, for the long-delayed inauguration of Alassane Ouattara as president. The ceremony was attended by many African heads of state, as well as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.The inauguration comes nearly six months after Ouattara won the election, but could not take office, as outgoing president Laurent Gbagbo refused to concede defeat sparking a conflict that claimed almost 3,000 lives. Ouattara took power after Gbagbo’s arrest on 11 Apr after weeks of clashes between soldiers who remained loyal to the former head of state and Ouattara’s forces backed by UN and French troops. The new head of state is expected to form a new government shortly and legislative elections will be held before the end of the year as the world’s largest cocoa producer pulls itself out of political unrest and economic stagnation.
